- Short passwords 'hopelessly inadequate', say boffins. The Register 16/08/2010
«The number crunching abilities of graphics processors were recently applied to commercial password auditing and recovery tools from Russian developer ElcomSoft. It's a safe assumption that black hats are able to use the same type of technology for less laudable purposes.» Read more
- Secured iOS Backups Reduce Security, But Not By Much. TidBITS 09/08/2010
«At first, I thought Elcomsoft had discovered a major flaw in the way that iOS allows iTunes to back up the data store of an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Nowadays graphic cards are becoming increasingly fast and it is very tempting to aim this power at challenging computation task. In this presentation I will show how GPUs can be applied to significantly accelerate password recovery (which usually translates to doing some cryptography as fast as possible). I will also show how to build PC capable of recovering Windows passwords hashes at a rate of 1.5 billion passwords per second for less than $2000. |

When an employee gets fired, often finds the employer a lot of password-protected documents on his or her computer. The files are here without any possibility of getting access to them, right? Wrong. The Russian company ElcomSoft claims to recover the passwords and, thus, save critically important documents. Vladimir Katalov, CEO of ElcomSoft, told PC Professionell about password recovery methods based on the complex cryptographic algorithms. Then the camera-shy CEO yielded the floor to his marketing expert Katerina Korolkova. Besides explaining other issues, she answered the editor’s tricky question on whether ElcomSoft’s tech guys come from the Russian mafia. |

This talk is about using graphic processors for accelerating cryptographic algorithms and, thus, password recovery. Some information on GPU architecture will be given along with general optimization strategies. Step by step, you'll see how to build GPU-enabled password cracker from ground up and turn your GeForce into password crunching machine :-) |
